The EMCA (Electronic Monitoring Cable Anchor) device was developed in South Africa by Sandbox Mining, specifically to find a way of accurately measuring pressures and tensions in rock anchors. It does not rely on people as a primary warning system - rather it becomes the primary warning system by actively monitoring tension in every anchor it is fitted to. It is set to an upper and lower limit which will warn the rock engineers of any movements in the hanging walls or sidewalls (focused on pillar pressure monitoring). It records a history of the specific anchor's tension and thus can give indications of what is happening in the rock.
