can still be seen stranded on the beach. Locals also know the town as Waenshuiskrans, named after the cave that is large enough to house several ox-wagons. For over two hundred years local fishermen have lived here in character filled cottages in the adjoining village of Kassiesbaai. Today the fishing and diving spots as well as the beautiful shells washed up on the beach are shared with visitors to the village. The area abounds with many bird species, including the elegant Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird, and from June to December the Southern Right whale can be spotted off the coast. Nearby is the southernmost town in Africa, L’Agulhas, with its unusual lighthouse, Bredasdorp with an interesting shipwreck museum as well as the De Hoop Nature Reserve, an undisturbed veld populated by birds, Bontebok and other animals and the venue for South Africa’s Whale Trail, a pleasurable 5 day hike.
