Sport massage has become increasingly in demand as it’s recognised as a skill that aids recovery, enhance performance and highlight problem areas. It is overuse or strain that often creates problems in the muscle tissue, and if these go undetected they will not only hinder the athlete’s improvement and performance, but also subject the athlete to developing chronic conditions or serious injury. Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulations – including muscles, tendons and ligaments with physical, functional and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. It’s recorded as one of the earliest forms of physical therapy and it was used by very different cultures over 3000 years ago. spasms and headaches; assist in healing in certain post surgical procedures; pregnancy and also helps in relieving symptoms of chronic neurological diseases. I qualified for my diploma of Therapeutic Massage Therapy at the Cape Institute for Allied Health Studies in 2004. After studying, I completed a contract aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and continued volunteer work in various clinics and private practices in New York, Las Vegas and Fort Lauderdale. On return to Cape Town, I began practising from Sports Science Physiotherapy Centre based in the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. I gained valuable knowledge and insight working alongside the skilled and highly competent physiotherapists within my 2 year stay at SSPC. I am now in private practice which allows me more freedom to continue studies and pursue other avenues in sport massage.
