JONKER SAILPLANES

The company Jonker Sailplanes was formally founded in 2004 by brothers Attie and Uys Jonker and Johan Bosman. Attie & Uys are both South African National Soaring Team members. They have participated in various international gliding competitions and finished 5th and 13th respectively in the WGC, Leszno, Poland (2003). The JS-1 Revelation sailplane was designed by chief design engineer Attie Jonker and his team at the School for Mechanical and Material Engineering of North West University in Po hefstroom, which offered the advantages of university environments, like state of the art design software, testing facilities, a composite materials workshop, e . The highly promising design phase was soon followed by work on the prototype. The Jonker's had already gained much useful experience

through their sailplane repair facility, renowned countrywide for its high quality work on composite sailplanes and motorgliders. In 2003 the repair facility moved from the University grounds to Po hefstroom Airfield. Johan Bosman, under the tutelage of Attie Jonker, completed his Masters in Engineering in 2003 on the wing design of the JS-1 Revelation. With the assistance of Professor Loek Boermans of Delft University in Holland, the wing design was verified: it proved highly efficient and uncompromised, and appeared aesthetically pleasing. Several other engineering students at the university in Po hefstroom did final-year as well as Masters & Doctoral engineering projects relating to the sailplane.
