Carbon Budgets

About the product
A carbon budget is a tolerable quantity of GHG emissions that an economy can emit in total over a specified time. In 2015, countries that are party to the UNFCCC submitted their INDCs (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions) as part of their commitment.

These national GHG emission budgets need to be in line with what is scientifically required to prevent the damaging effects of climate change. Many responsible businesses around the world are starting to do the same.

The IPCC’s fifth assessment report (AR5) estimates that cumulative carbon dioxide (CO2) related to human activities needs to be limited to 1 TRILLION TONS, if we are to have a likely chance of limiting global warming to 2°C. This is our “global carbon budget”. So far, since 1750 we have exhausted 52% of that budget, leaving us with just about 3 decades left to spend it (at current fossil-fuel consumption trajectory).

According to the 2015 Carbon Offset Draft Regulations Paper published by National Treasury; carbon tax-paying companies that have a carbon budget will qualify for a 5% reduction on their carbon tax bill. GSCN assists clients develop a robust carbon budget for their business.
