Company description
South African Railways Class 6J This class of locomotive was designed by Mr.H.M.Beatty, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Cape Government Railways. Neilson, Reid and Co. supplied 14 bar framed locomotives in 1902. These were used on the Cape main line and became the Class 6J when taken into the S.A.R. stock after the formation of the Union. The last of these locomotives were removed from service in Bethlehem in 1972. The tractive effort was 18, 780 lbs at 75% boiler pressure, and utilized Stephenson valve gear.
