HOUGHTON GOLF CLUB

Houghton Golf Club is one of South Africa's premier golfing venues having been on the SA Open roster since 1951 and having hosted the event on eight occasions. One of the Highveld's many fully mature golf courses, its original design dates from 1926. A.M. Copland, the club's first professional, was the course architect, laying out the course on a thickly treed tract of land featuring considerable undulation. Dotted with ponds and dams, an abundance of flowering shrubs provide great variety and colour. The site is a proclaimed bird sanctuary with Egyptian geese, guinea fowl, dikkhops, plovers and a variety of waterfowl in abundance. the game it has enjoyed a relatively recent programme of modernisation. In 1993 the design firm of Matkovich and Hayes remodelled several holes, introducing water hazards positioned to plague the tee shot on several par fours (the 13th, 14th and 7th) and also redesigning the 18th and 5th.
