The Department of Home Affairs offers a multitude of services to the citizens of South Africa, as well as foreigners who wish to visit, work or stay in South Africa. The Department’s core functions are:

Civic Services
Immigration
Maintaining the National Population Register (NPR)
Managing the birth, marriage and death records
Determining and granting citizenship
Issuing travel documents and passports
Issuing identity documents (ID)
Administering admissions into the country
Determining the residency status of foreigners and issuing permits thereof

Mandate

The mandate of the Department is two-fold:

Firstly, the Department of Home Affairs is custodian, protector and verifier of the identity and status  
Show more of citizens and other persons resident in South Africa. This makes it possible for people to realize their rights and access benefits and opportunities in both the public and private domains. By expanding these services to marginalized communities, the department plays is a key enabler in deepening democracy and social justice.

Secondly, the Department of Home Affairs controls, regulates and facilitates immigration and the movement of persons through ports of entry. It also provides civics and immigration services at foreign missions; and determines the status of asylum seekers and refugees in accordance with international obligations. The department thus makes a significant contribution to ensuring national security, enabling economic development and promoting good international relations.

Today I visited home affairs Queenstown branch for 10H00-11H00 appointment for ID application I did on BABS for my late cousins son whom I am a guardian to. I am thankful for the service I got from the lady security at the door to the lady that processed the application at counter 4. Even the time I spent inside I only spent 30min with whole process It could have been less if electricity did not cut off. I honestly didn't expect it to be so quick. Hoping it will continue as such. Thank you to the new system.

Greatest Service ever
I'd like to share my greatest of experience I've been exposed to by Khathu & Rendani at your Alexandra Home Affairs office.

Rendani in particular was so patient with all the complaining clients, he politely answered all their questions and directed them to the correct information Desks. I've never seen any government employees really going out of their ways to ensure clients are assisted the way Rendani and his Staff did. Please promote him and Khathu or give them a well deserved incentives.

Excellent service
I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent customer service which we had received from your branch on my last visit to your office. The staff was warm and accommodating, and they were helpful to us especially the supervisor Claudette Naidoo.

I hope that this is the kind of service that will be present in your branch permanently as this is what the customers want to have.

Horrible Service!!!
Spent 4 hours in the queue outside. Got in and met the most rude and un helpful people I have ever seen in my life. Everything inside is an absolute mess. I don't know why they are open for business if you wait for that long and still walk out unsatisfied. I cannot believe that technology has advanced so much and yet the service is absolutely horrible to say the least.

Extremely upset and angry that this is the type of country we live in and that this is the kind of service we receive !!!

Bad service
I sat at the Edenvale office from 12:00, the automatic queuing system was flawed, people who came in around 15:00 completed their applications before those who came in earlier. No one to attend to queries. Staff shouts at people. Most counters did not have attendants. 3 hours later still not served

FANTASTIC Experience
Edenvale Home Affairs was such an awesome experience - ladies and gents you were GREAT!! Keep up the fantastic work - applied for all 4 of our passports and hubby's new ID card - took all in all 2.5 hours - it was sooo organised with the system they have in place and a pleasant experience indeed. Thanks to all!!

Incompetent staff
The landline phone is never answered, what's the point of having one in the office if no one bothers to pick it up.
Couldn't get assisted to booking an appointment with marriage officer since system was of line, after I had to drive there to physically book because the phone is not functional.I asked one of them to take my details and atleast update me once system is back online so I can come back, was told that it is not possible to that, its a lot of work and responsibility which he wont do.
I could not believe the response.

Brilliant service !
Went to Edenvale home affairs this afternoon to apply for urgent passport renewal as I need to travel for work. I was so taken aback by the friendly helpful staff and efficient service. You all are amazing - service with a smile. Just hope I get my passport in time to travel. Keep up the brilliant work .you are what we need in SA.

Went to Home Affairs Edenvale this morning thinking how depressing it is going to be. To my surprise I was stunt at how friendly the staff were. James took the time to explain the process and was very helpful. At unabridge birth cert Bushey was just as friendly and quick. Thx guys you rock very organised and Roodepoort can take note of how things should be done.

I checked on the website, it said that the Edenvale office closes at 4 pm. I got there at 3.10 pm. There was a sign up at the door that applications for IDS and Passports were closed for the day. I was there to get birth certificates and marriage certificates. The gentleman at the door was perched on a wall just inside the entrance, swinging one leg, arms crossed and did not make eye contact.
Shouting across the huge room, he got the attention of some man who came to speak to me and explained that it doesnt matter what it says on the websites, the staff have the right to limit access as and when they please so that they can go home at 4 pm.
I asked for forms to fill in at home, was given one each of very poorly photostated documents, with the writing on one side cut off. When I asked for better I was told to visit another office as Edenvale doesnt have other forms. I had to bring this rubbish home and copy on my printer until I got them dark enough to be legible, that doesnt allieviate the problem of the writing being cut off.
Incredibly frustrating and ugly experience.

I Was very impressed About the Service I received today at Home Affairs Edenvale. I literally walked in and out with a smile on my face. A special Thanks to Mpho, Rina and Janine you guys are shining stars. My Passport application is all done.

Well, its another one of those really sad cases, I applied for unabridged certificates - 2016-12-31 and went to follow up again in 2015, and now we are in 2016, guys, hope you sleep well, because you do a lot of that ! sadly the demise of a potentially great country run by sadly apathetic lazy souls who really don't want to do their jobs, try phone call centre - network congested, try phone branch, engaged, gee - sleeping on the job again I see ?????? nothing works ?????? Happy to take my money and you take your time to NOT do your jobs
